Cardboard Box City 2010

Are YOU up to it?

Spend one night in the box.
Raise money and awareness to
combat homelessness in Rochester.
October 22-23

Every night 15 to 37 homeless people in Rochester seek shelter and a meal.  Cardboard Box City is an event to raise money and awareness for the homeless community in Rochester.  Youth in grades 7 and up are invited to join us as we spend one night in Cardboard Box City.  We will sleep overnight in a box and experience for just one night what it might be like to be homeless.  All money raised will benefit the Salvation Army and Interfaith Hospitality Network (IHN).

Parents, students and potential volunteers please join us for an informational meeting on Monday, September 27th at 6:30 pm in the St. Clare Room.  We will have a representative from IHN so that we may learn more about this organization.  We'll discuss the details of the events and talk about collecting "rent" money.

This is a great event that gives youth and adults an experience of homelessness that is not soon forgotten.  Please consider joining us!

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

Final middle school movie night this summer:
Wednesday, August 25th
6:00-9:30 pm
St. Clare Social Room (We will use the kitchen to make pizzas!)
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

Make your own pizza night!  We'll provide the pizza crust and sauce.  Bring your own cheese and/or a topping to share!  We'll enjoy pizza, popcorn and candy (of course!) during the movie.  Afterwards we'll discuss themes in the movie such as greed, selfishness, hope, perseverance and character.  Bring a friend!  Turn in permission forms beforehand or RSVP if you've already turned a form in!

U.S. Catholic Bishops Review:
Entertaining and stylish remake of 1971's "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory," as sweet-natured young Charlie (Freddie Highmore), along with four bratty children, wins a visit to a mysterious emporium, run by the reclusive candy-maker Wonka (Johnny Depp). Tim Burton's take on the Roald Dahl tale is predictably darker than the bright Gene Wilder version, but it's hugely inventive, combining Dickensian atmospherics with mordant wit and featuring an understated, slyly humorous performance by Depp who seems, at times, to be channeling Michael Jackson's Neverland persona. The plot contains positive messages about family, loyalty and unselfishness, and only a few scenes of tongue-in-cheek peril that might upset the very youngest viewers. A-I -- general patronage. Luau for Haiti: Update

Thank you to everyone who donated school supplies to send to the Haiti Mission.  St. Francis church sent about 2 bins full of school supplies--thank you for your support!

Congratulations to Nick, Allison, Nick and Jill--our creative photo contest winners!

The youth ministers pose for a photo with Pam Trebtoske who spoke about her experiences in Haiti during the earth quake.

The Luau for Haiti was a wonderful night of fun, games, entertainment...and all for a good cause.  We raised over $200 for the Catholic Relief Services effort in Haiti.  We heard from Pam Trebtoske who works with the Sacred Heart mission in Haiti and was actually there on a mission trip during the earthquake when it hit!  She shared compelling stories of the school and orphanage who are in great need and will be very grateful for the money and donations raised from the Luau.  We all had a great time--thanks for your support!

Special thanks goes to Pam Trebtosk for sharing with the group and also to Angie Slattery for hosting this event at the New Pax Christi Youth Center.  Thank you!

When Gandalf discovers the Ring is in fact the One Ring of the Dark Lord Sauron, Frodo must make an epic quest to the Cracks of Doom in order to destroy it! However he does not go alone. He is joined by Gandalf, Legolas the elf, Gimli the Dwarf, Aragorn, Boromir and his three Hobbit friends Merry, Pippin and Samwise. Through mountains, snow, darkness, forests, rivers and plains, facing evil and danger at every corner the Fellowship of the Ring must go. Their quest to destroy the One Ring is the only hope for the end of the Dark Lords reign! Written by Paul Twomey" --Taken from IMDB.com

Maybe you've seen LOTR before--let's watch it together on a deeper level.  This film is packed with symbolism and connections to our Christian faith.  From sin, temptation, and evil to friendship, love, and hope--this story will have us asking questions and looking at our own lives.  Let's not just be "entertained" by this movie.  Let's dig deeper and see what we can discover together!

HSCCB Movie Review:
The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring -- Visually splendid adventure tale set in the mythical realm of Middle-earth where a humble Hobbit (Elijah Wood), assisted by eight faithful companions (including Ian McKellen), embarks on a perilous quest to destroy a ring which possess the ultimate source of dark power. Based on the first book of J.R.R. Tolkien's trilogy, director Peter Jackson's fantasy is true to the epic struggle of good versus evil and uses magnificent effects and location shots. Yet its myriad characters prove daunting and the narrative grows repetitive. Many scenes of battle violence with several frightening images. A-III -- adults. (PG-13) 2001

MS Movie Night: The Princess Bride!

Monday, August 9th
6:00-9:30 pm ~ Activity Room
The Princess Bride

This movie is considered one of the most "qoutable" movies of all time.  We'll join in with a poor farm boy and a beautiful young girl as they encounter adventure, sword fights, monsters, giants, and more!  Our discussion will cause us to thin kabout revenge, honor, friendship and true love.  Games, food and fun will be included!  Join us!  Please trun in permission forms or RSVP by Monday at noon.

See the USCCB review here:
Princess Bride, The -- Affectionate, lighthearted parody of medieval romance as a young beauty (Robin Wright) is saved from a forced marriage to a nasty prince (Chris Sarandon) by a farm boy turned pirate (Cary Elwes). Directed by Rob Reiner from William Goldman's script, the comic proceedings are marked with verbal wit and some silly turns by Mandy Patinkin, Wallace Shawn and Billy Crystal. Some comic book violence. (A-II) (PG) ( 1987 )
